FPPE Physican Peer Reviews

External Reviews That Are Timely And Objective

Please call (888) 899-1406 to schedule a free consultation to talk about how we can conduct FPPEs for your organization. We will also be happy to show you a redacted sample of one of our FPPE reports.

Focused Professional Practice Evaluations (FPPEs) are an important tool in evaluating a physician’s competency and delivery of quality care. At MRN, over the years, we’ve conducted hundreds of external peer reviews for healthcare organizations of all sizes.

FPPEs For Credentialing And Privileges
FPPEs are often used at the time of initial credentialing for a physician, and they can also be used for the purposes of renewing, suspending, or revoking a physician’s privileges. Because FPPEs are so important, it is mandatory that they are fair, objective and confidential – which is why many healthcare organizations choose to use an external peer review company rather than asking in-house staff to perform FPPEs.

FPPEs For Adverse Events Or Deviations In Standard Of Care
FPPEs can also be triggered by an adverse event, sub-standard care, or poor outcome. A comprehensive FPPE, performed by a qualified physician reviewer, can often pinpoint the cause of an event or outcome. FPPEs can also lead to recommendations in changes in an organization’s policies and procedures.

FPPEs For Quality Control
Healthcare organizations will also request FPPEs – selected randomly or based on information from data and reports – to improve the quality of care provided.

Expert Physician Peer Reviewers
Unlike other external peer review companies, we don’t have any physicians on staff or physicians that we use routinely. Instead, for each FPPE, we choose the physician that’s best suited to review the case. We have a large database of physicians we can call on, all of whom are board-certified and in active, clinical practice. We always choose a physician reviewer who has the same expertise and has worked in a similar practice setting as the physician who’s being reviewed.

What’s Included In An FPPE
While each FPPE that we conduct is unique to the circumstances of the request and case, our objective peer reviews typically include:

  • identification and retention of the appropriate expert reviewer
  • retrieval and examination of medical records
  • obtaining analysis and conclusions from the physician reviewer through an interview
  • recommendations for actions (or non-actions) to be taken in regards to the physician being reviewed
  • potentially recommending changes in protocols and/or procedures for the organization

For an OPPE, we can either use a form and process that have been designed by your organization, or we can help you create those. In general, however, OPPEs typically include:

  • identification and retention of the appropriate expert reviewer
  • retrieval and examination of medical records
  • obtaining analysis and conclusions from the physician reviewer through an interview

Timely FPPEs
Often, when we’re asked to perform an FPPE for a physician, there’s some urgency involved. Because our legal nurse consultants manage the FPPEs and write the reports, they’re able work with the physician reviewer to produce timely, comprehensive, easy-to-understand reports.

For more information about our physician peer review services, or to set up a free consultation, please call (888) 899-1406, or e-mail medres@medres.net.

Please note that in addition to FPPE physician peer reviews, we can also conduct OPPE physician peer reviews, as well as peer reviews for other healthcare professionals.
